Many islanders are following the progress of plans for redevelopment of Osney Mead.

Full redevelopment will take some years, but there will be a lot more people working and possibly living on Osney Mead in the future.
Key issues for Osney Island are ensuring that the new development:
- respects the Conservation Area and special character of the island, in particular with respect to access which is a big issue for the site
- focuses on the needs of West Oxford residents (new and existing) rather than creating a tourist attraction or an extension of the city centre
- reduces flood risk for the island, and builds adequate sewage infrastructure
- has an attractive sustainable design, that reflects the heritage of the area
- protects and increases wildlife habitat
